Chapter 1434:

Jacob stopped abruptly.

Lawrence cto a halt right behind him. “What is it?”

Jacob latched onto a single word. “Roommates?”

“That's right,” said Lawrence, as if it was obvious. “Since you wouldn't letcrash at your place, | had to settle

for cheap hostels. Shared rooms, cramped bunks, and cheap rent.”

Jacob shot him a look full of doubt. The idea of Lawrence, used to comfort and luxury, squeezing into a hostel

bed seemed far-fetched. Even if he wasn't officially with the Hayes family, he had enough money to live well.

The story just didn’t add up.

“If you're going to make things up, at least try to make it believable,” Jacob said, not bothering to hide his

skepticism.

“Look—I've even got proof.” Lawrence produced a crumpled receipt from his pocket. “Picked this up from the

owner last month. Was planning to ask for a refund once you letstay over.”

Jacob stared at him, barely able to hide his skepticism.

“You kickedout, so covering my expenses seems only fair,” said Lawrence as he handed over the receipt.

Jacob scanned it. No question—it was real.

“What's the nof that hostel?” Jacob asked, eyeing him closely.

Lawrence rattled off the address right away. He wasn’t worried. He had already made arrangements with the

owner to play along—and maybe even make him sound a little more pathetic if Jacob casking questions.

“I'll have Freya check the security footage.” Jacob ran his finger along the edge of the receipt. “We'll find out if

you actually stayed there.”

A hint of panic crept into Lawrence's eyes. “Don’t you think that’s going too far for K?”

“Not at all,” Jacob answered, seeing straight through him.

“Why not just call the owner?” Lawrence tried to deflect—anything to keep Jacob from going to Freya, because

that would blow the whole story wide open.

“If Freya can check in five minutes, why should | bother running down there?” Jacob’s reply was steady. “That'd

be a waste of time.”

“I would make the effort to be anywhere in person when it’s about you.” Lawrence's tone softened as he tried a

different approach.
