Chapter 402: Why not test run the plan?

Chapter 402: Why not test run the plan?

Taking the stairs to go up, Davis felt his leg heavy, his heart tightening with every step on the staircase.

He might have been able to convince Grandpa downstairs that she was only unconscious, but he couldn't

convince himself,he couldn't stop the hurt and the sharp ache in his chest.

Davis paused at the door of the bedroom, he stretched his hand to the doorknob but he felt stuck, he couldn't

brace himself to open this door.

This had been their little sanctuary since they returned from Noveira, but now it might even be his nightmare.

A mocking smile curled up his lips. "I have always been anxious to cinto this room to find her."

He couldn’t help recalling her various postures. Sometimes, he opens the door and finds her sitting with crossed

legs, eyes glued to her phone or her laptop before her.

At other times, she would be lying with her stomach, her legs raised up and she swung them about carelessly.

With her stomach getting bigger by the day, her posture changed to lying on her side.

Davis’ fist tightened on the doorknob, his breath hitched. "With you at the hospital, the room isn’t of any use," he

muttered.

He turned sharply and headed directly to the study. This had been his safe zone in the tpast and maybe this

time, it might still be.

Standing in the study, the pains of the past, his struggles with Jessica, her pains and struggles to see him back

on his feet and the pains of seeing her motionless crashed down on him.

He slumped weakly into his seat, his fist clenched tightly as he stared into the distance. Several thoughts

coursed through him. It was so much that he found himself unraveling.

He took claiming breathe he needed to hold himself together. He couldn't afford to break now, too many people

were already depending on him.

He pulled open his drawer to rummage through its contents. It wasn’t clear what exactly it was he wanted.

But after a few seconds of searching, he sighed with visible relief as he pulled out a cigarette pack.

A faint smile tugged at his lips as he recalled how they had argued over this pack of cigarettes and how he had

solemnly promised not to smoke anymore.

But at this moment, he couldn't keep that promise because more than anything he needed something to hold

on, something to calm his fraying nerves, to numb the ache tearing at his chest, to make him forget.

"Babe, would you be angry if | lit this cigarette?" he asked as he twirled a stick of the cigarette in his hand.

He leaned back on his seat, his gaze into the distance. His phone buzzed in his pocket, reminding him he hasn't

even changed out of his clothes since he returned.

He pulled out his phone from his pocket, a familiar nflashed on the screen.

Julian.

"Dave, how are you holding up?" he asked. For the first time, Davis felt his voice too familiar to hers.

Was it just his imagination and thought or was that the fact? At this time, it no longer mattered, she probably

might not be speaking to him for the next few days...or more than.

Not hearing any response from him, Julian exhaled slowly over the phone. "Dave, you know sister would prefer to

see a strong man who could weather any storm. Not a man who is easily drowned by life's unpleasant certainty."

Hearing Julian's words, his temper snapped at once. Without any care, he tugged at the tie harshly as he undid

it, he had just struck where it hurt the most.

He could be whatever man she wanted but then what's the essence when she isn’t there to stand beside him?

But then Julian wasn’t wrong.

He needed to get hold of himself and that he would certainly do.

No doubt, it wouldn't be an easy task but no matter how many days and how long it took him, he must brace

himself to be that strong unshakable man.

"I know this isn’t the reason you called, what is going on?" he asked.

"| sent a message to your mailbox but I noticed you haven't opened, so | thought..."

"Document or clip?" Davis asked.

"Both," Julian clipped, and just as he was about to end the call, Davis’ voice halted him. "Julian, thank... you..."

After the brief chat with Julian discussing a few matters, the call ended.

Davis exhaled briefly, he pulled his laptop closer to him and with a click, its glowing light flickered through the

study, illuminating the room, a thought he hadn't bothered about when he cin.

After spending more than three hours in the study, Davis was able to set a groundwork of his revenge and path

to unravel Sylas Louis.

Like a cat stalking its prey, he wanted to watch the gplay out to its bitter end. He really wants to see who

laughs last...just like the adage said.

He stretched himself briefly, flexing his arms as he stood up from the seat ready to settle on the couch in the

study when Ethan tapped lightly on the door.

"Cin," Davis answered and settled back into his chair.

"Take a look at this and decide what the next step would be," Ethan said as he dropped a file before him.
